Chapter 29: What Bridie Chose
Linnet's POV
Bridie did not come toward me when I reached the end of the corridor.
She stood beside her bag with her hands folded in front of her, the way she used to stand at the bottom of the stairs when she was nine and had broken something.
"You should be in bed," I said.
"I've been in bed for five years."
She said it without any edge.
"The old doctor is taking me to Southbay tonight. Not to the Alpha's house. To the clinic on the quay."
"Why?"
"There are forty-one families on the thin dose, and he has the book. He can't give the full course alone. He needs someone who knows what it's like to wait for the next vial."
She took a breath.
"I know what it's like. And I know what it cost, and who paid it."
I had imagined this talk a hundred ways since the festival.
In some of them I shouted. In some she cried first, as she always did, and I forgave her before she finished.
She wasn't crying now.
"I'm not asking you to forgive me," Bridie said. "I knew about Garrick for three years before I took him. I knew he was yours."
"I know."
"I told myself you'd stopped wanting him. I told myself a lot of things, because Mother said them first."
"Bridie."
"Let me finish. I won't be brave again."
She held out her left wrist.
The jade bangle still hung there, green and thin, one of the pair I had saved for.
She worked it over her knuckles, wincing, and put it into my hand.
"Garrick wrote to me this morning. From the Ironridge road. He wants me to come to him."
"What did you do with the letter?"
