Chapter 20: The Leak
Hayes read the text over my shoulder.
His chin came off my shoulder very slowly.
"Give me the phone," he said.
"No."
"I want to see the angle."
He took it anyway, carefully, with his wrists, and held it up against the lake.
"Low. Close to the water. Off the point by the cattails." He pointed. "There. Somebody sat in a boat there with a long lens."
There was no boat by the cattails now. Just a heron.
"I'm going to go look."
"In your boxers?"
He looked down at himself.
"I'd put pants on first."
"Hayes. Sit down. Drink your terrible coffee."
He sat down. He didn't drink it.
By nine I knew where the picture went.
Patty called from the tow boat. I could hear the outboard behind her.
"Kid. Don't open Chelsea's page."
I opened Chelsea's page.
There I was. On his porch, in his flannel, with my coffee.
Under it she'd written a paragraph.
"While my sister plays the victim and calls my fiancé a monster, here's where she woke up today."
