Chapter 10: Two Million

I watched the number climb until I made myself close the app.

It was still climbing in the morning.

Three million by the time I got to work.

In the kitchen at Carrick Works, two of the developers were watching it on a phone by the coffee machine.

They didn't hear me come in.

"I love you, Jenna," said my sister's voice, small and tinny out of the phone speaker.

One of them looked up and saw me. He fumbled the phone and turned it off.

"Hey," he said. "Sorry. Is that... is she talking about you?"

I nodded.

He didn't know what to say. He went red and left with his coffee.

The other one was a Deaf woman who sat two desks down from me. She'd signed good morning to me every day since I started.

She looked at me for a second. Then she signed, small, by her hip.

"We all saw your commit history. We know."

I signed thank you.

My hands only barely worked.

At ten, someone sent around a clip from the local morning show.

Jenna sat on a yellow couch across from the host, in the same cream sweater.

"The twin with a heart of gold," the host called her.

Jenna laughed and covered her face.

"I just want my sister back," she said. "That's all. If she's watching, Amy, I'm right here."

The host reached over and squeezed her hand.

Behind them, on the big screen, was my blue icon.

That night, I did something stupid.

I went to Jenna's video and wrote a comment.

I'm the sister. I'm fine. I wrote every line of Speakeasy. I don't need her voice. I need my name back on my work.
