I typed it all.
The window. The patio. The phone call. Rings come off.
I read it over once and pressed send.
A red line came up under the message.
Not delivered.
I tried again. The same red line.
I opened her page. It loaded fine for me.
So she hadn't deleted anything. She had only blocked my number.
Her newest post was from that morning, a photo of a plane wing over the clouds.
LA for two weeks!!! Podcast tour, then home on the 19th to finish wedding planning. Love you, Pittsburgh.
I put the phone face down on the table, next to the analyst's twenty.
Two weeks later, on Tuesday, October twentieth, I sat in a small room on the third floor of the voice clinic.
There was a mirror on the wall and a box of tissues on the table.
The speech therapist sat across from me with her silver earrings and a little recorder.
My voice rest had ended the week before.
Since then I'd been allowed to breathe out loud on purpose, and to hum with my mouth shut, and nothing else.
