Chapter 28: My Name
Nothing came out.
Just air, loud through the speakers.
Somebody near the back laughed.
Then somebody else shushed them.
I closed my mouth.
In the wings, Jenna had stopped walking. I could see the white of her dress at the edge of the curtain.
I breathed in again, all the way down, until my ribs pushed against the wire under my sweater.
I didn't reach for it.
I let it fall out.
"My name is Amy Eberhardt."
It came out low and scraped and cracked in two places.
It didn't sound like my sister.
It didn't sound like anybody in that building.
Six hundred people went completely still.
I took one more breath.
"I wrote every line of Speakeasy."
The crack came on Speakeasy, the way it always did.
I got through it anyway.
Then my throat was done. I could feel it, hot and tired, the way the therapist said it would be.
That was all the voice I had for one night.
