Chapter 10: Harriet's Offer

Pelham's was a tearoom on Euclid Avenue with a glass front and forty tables.

Every table was full by four o'clock on a Wednesday.

That was Harriet's choice, and I understood it as soon as I sat down.

She would do her wicked work in front of forty women.

All of them would watch her being kind.

"My darling," she said. "You look thin. Have the almond cake."

"I will have tea."

She poured it herself.

She wore dove grey with a small pearl at her throat, and her hands were steady on the pot.

Tobias had said, on the walk over, "Do not go in."

I had said, "She has Nan."

He had said, "She has had Nan since yesterday noon, and she will have you by supper if you walk in. Do not give her a second one."

I had gone in anyway, and he was waiting at the end of the street with his collar turned up.

"I am going to be plain with you, Adaline," Harriet said. "Because I admire you, and I think you will prefer it."

"Please."

"Langston has behaved badly. He has been a boy, and I will not defend it."

She sipped.

"But we have seen what you are made of," she said. "I should like you for a daughter more than I did a week ago."

"That is very kind."

"It is practical, my dear. You will come back to us. You will marry my son at Christmas, in a small ceremony, and the Fenner girl will be sent to a very good place in the country where she will be well looked after."
