Chapter 6: The Inspector Calls

The knock came at noon, and it was a policeman's knock, three blows with the flat of a fist.

Tobias was at the window before the third.

"Two men on the step," he said. "One in uniform, one in a good coat. And a carriage at the corner with a Haldane crest on the door."

"Langston," Nan said.

She had gone grey.

She was already on her feet with her back to the wall.

"They have no warrant for these rooms," Tobias said. "They have a notice of concern for a young lady's welfare, which any magistrate will sign for a banker. They will ask to see you. If you refuse, they will come in."

"Then I won't refuse," I said.

"Adaline."

"I'm not going to be fetched out of here like a runaway servant."

I put on my cloak.

I took the tin box from the bed and set it in his hands, and then I went down the two flights of glue-smelling stairs with my hand on the rail.

The street door opened on the lane.

It was a busy lane, full of shop fronts, and the neighbours were already at their windows.

The bookbinder stood in his apron with his arms folded.

The inspector was a stout man with a bowler hat held against his chest.

"Miss Severance?" he said. "I am sorry to trouble you. Your father is very anxious."

"I am sure he is."

"I am instructed to see that you are well, and to take you home if you wish to go."

"I do not wish to go," I said, loudly enough for the lane. "I am twenty-four years old. I left my father's house of my own will, and I left the Haldane house of my own will, and neither of those is a crime. You may write that down."
