Chapter 9: What He Saw on the Stairs
We stayed in the loft until the doctor's carriage went away.
Tobias sat on a bale of sheepskin with his back to a beam, and I sat on a roll of paper with my wrist in my lap.
He had not let go of it until the bookbinder called that the street was clear.
Neither of us said so.
"How did you know where to find Nan?" I asked.
"I told you. Pearl Street."
"Yes, but how did you know it was Pearl Street?"
He looked at his hands.
"Answer me."
"I followed her there," he said.
"When?"
"In September."
The loft was very quiet.
"Langston sent her out on an errand," Tobias said. "I was in the garden at Euclid Avenue. I saw her go in at the back and I knew her face from the kitchen window. I followed her to her boarding house, and then I stood across the street and watched her come out in the evening with a man's gloves in her hand."
"Whose gloves?"
"My brother's."
"You are saying you knew," I said slowly, "that he had a girl in the house, in September, while I was choosing the hymns."
"I suspected."
"You were in my church."
"Yes."
"You saw her go up his back stairs."
"I saw her go up them in the afternoon, and I saw the curtain on his window drawn, yes."
I stood up.
The paper rolled out from under me and across the floor.
"Eight weeks before my wedding," I said. "You knew."
"I knew what a man does when a pretty maid goes up the stairs. I did not know what she was. I did not know she had a gun."
