Chapter 4: Her Terms

Birdie did not tell Amos Dawes to leave.

She told him the diner opened at six, and that the gravel was for paying customers.

Then she walked back inside, and eight patched men followed her in to order breakfast, because that was the only way to get close to me.

I sat down at the corner table by the window, where I could see the lot and the door.

Boone took the chair across from me without being asked.

Amos took the stool at the counter, directly under the menu board, and ordered coffee politely.

Six of the men filled the other booths and said nothing.

Two stood by the door with their arms folded.

A deputy in a tan uniform sat at the far end of the counter with a plate of eggs and did not look up.

I noticed him, and then I noticed that Birdie had put a fresh cup in front of him before he asked.

"Mrs. Gallagher," Amos said pleasantly, "you left something at the clubhouse."

He opened his fist and set my silver wedding ring on the counter.

It rolled in a slow circle and fell flat.

"Rafe found it by the sink," he said. "He thought you'd want it back before the Sunday meeting."

"I don't."

"Lena," Boone said under his breath.

"Keep it," I said to Amos. "Put it with the other things the club took from me."

A man in the nearest booth coughed.

Amos folded his hands.

"Nobody took anything. A club has needs. It is a hard thing to be the president's woman, and harder when the line doesn't see you beside him. Joelle was a courtesy to your husband."
