Chapter 20: The Button Comes Home

Imogen's POV

I came down the steps with flour on my sleeves.

I had been in the kitchen with the housekeeper, learning to make the dark northern bread, and I had not combed my hair.

The Crown Prince of Aurelmark stood in the middle of the yard in a plain coat, and fifty men watched him.

"Imogen," he said.

"Lady Garrow."

He flinched.

"Lady Garrow," he said. "Forgive me."

Cade had not moved from where he stood.

He was six feet from the prince with his hand resting on his belt.

He did not look at me, because he was waiting for me to choose.

I went and stood at his side.

"Why have you come?" I asked.

"To say what I should have said at the feast, before I said the other thing."

"Say it, then."

"I was wrong." The words came out slowly.

"I was wrong in the great hall, and I was wrong at the dance."

"Yes."

"You told me the knot. You told me the ford. I had every proof, and I took the story that matched my dream of you."

He shut his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Lady Garrow. I'm sorrier than I can say in front of these men."
