Chapter 15: Only True Things

Miranda's POV

By Tuesday, three strangers had tapped their thighs at me in the quad.

A freshman in a lacrosse hoodie did it from across the path, grinning, with two fingers going.

"Raccoon girl!" he called. "Type something!"

I walked faster.

By Wednesday, the video had eleven thousand views, and a sorority had made a cheer out of it.

Griffin had not texted me once.

I had told him not to, and he was obeying me with terrifying skill.

"It's a good sign," Rosetta said, from the floor of our room, where she was doing leg lifts for no reason. "It means he respects you."

"It means he's relieved."

"It means he's a golden retriever who got told to sit."

I lay on my bed with my laptop on my stomach and my fingers resting on my thigh.

For three days I had been trying something new.

I was typing only true things.

No lies on either side, and no raccoons.

It felt like walking down the street without any pants.

"I'm tired," I tapped, and the words floated up over the bed, small and white.

Nothing happened.

No grey line came, because he was a mile away on the river.

"I'm still angry," I tapped.

The words hung there, and nobody laughed at them.

"I miss him."

That one stayed in the air for a whole minute.

I watched it, with my heart going.

"Say something out loud," Rosetta said, from the floor. "I can't see anything. Just say it."
