Chapter 18: War Council

The war council met in Griffin's room on Sunday night, and it had a quorum of four.

Rosetta sat cross-legged on the floor with a poster board.

Beau sat on the desk chair backward, holding a bag of pretzels.

Griffin stood by the window, and I sat on his bed with my knees up, in my own cardigan, not his hoodie.

"The problem," Rosetta said, and tapped the poster board with a marker, "is a video."

"We know," said Beau.

"The solution is also a video."

"What video?"

"Camille records every council meeting for the minutes," Rosetta said. "I'm the AV chair for the nursing club. I have a login to the shared drive, and she never changed the password from Gala2024."

"She never changed it from the first gala," Beau said, with real admiration.

"The files play in order," Rosetta said. "When her clip ends, the next file loads. The next file is last Monday's meeting."

Griffin turned from the window.

"The one where she asked me to the gala."

"With her thumb going," I said. "Over the clipboard. For a full minute."

"Three minutes," Rosetta said. "I timed it. Tap, drag, tap."

I stared at her.

"You are a genius."

"I'm a nursing student," she said. "It's the same thing, but with worse hours."

We ran it three times.

Beau had the remote, and Rosetta had the booth, and Griffin had the speech.

I had the table at the back of the room, with a pillar, and a seat card nobody had shown me yet.

At nine, Rosetta stood and stretched her whole spine.

"I'm going to go sit in a stairwell and not hear anything," she said.

"I'm going to a hotel," Beau said.

"You live in this room."

"That's why I need a hotel."

The door shut.

The room went very quiet, and there was only the sound of the radiator, ticking.

Griffin stayed at the window with his hands in his pockets.

I slid off the bed and crossed the floor to his desk.
