Chapter 4: Two Thousand Meters
Rosetta dragged me to the charity row-a-thon on Saturday because she had already bet Beau five dollars that I would come.
"You're going," she said, and zipped my cardigan up like I was six.
"I have a stats set."
"You have a crush on a man who will be sweating in public for two thousand meters."
"I have a stats set," I said again, with less force.
The field house smelled like rubber and orange slices.
A row of rowing machines sat on the gym floor, each with a screen on top that counted meters, and a sponsor board hung behind them with a name for every pledge.
Griffin sat at the last machine in a grey team shirt, with his forearms flexed and his eyes on the screen.
Beau stood beside him with a clipboard, shouting numbers.
"Eleven hundred! You're at one thirty-eight a split! Keep it there!"
"Why is the number so small?" I whispered.
"Smaller is faster," Rosetta whispered back. "That's rowing."
"That's backwards."
"That's rowing."
I sat on the bleacher with my hands between my knees.
I was not going to type.
I had promised, in a laundry room, with a handshake.
"Miranda," Rosetta said. "He's looking at you."
He wasn't, but I felt it anyway.
The grey lines stayed away, since he had both hands on the handle.
I had a plan, and the plan was to be good.
At twelve hundred meters I broke it.
"The rowing machine is a hamster wheel for tall people."
Griffin's split jumped from one thirty-eight to one thirty-nine.
Beau looked at the screen and then at Griffin.
"What was that?"
"Nothing," Griffin said, through his teeth.
At fifteen hundred meters I tapped faster.
