Chapter 7: Blindfold
On Friday I made Griffin Standridge a bet, because I could not stand being the only one who was embarrassed.
I found him on the steps of Pike Hall at noon, eating a banana.
"You didn't answer her yet," I said.
"Who?"
"Camille. You said you'd let her know."
"I'm thinking about it," Griffin said.
"About what?"
"I'll tell you when I've decided."
"Then here's a bet," I said. "One hour, starting now. You react to nothing. No laughing, no coughing, no allergies. If you last the hour, I owe you a truth."
"What kind of truth?"
"A free one. No sandwich."
His eyebrows went up, both of them, and I tried not to look at the caterpillars.
"And if I lose?" he said.
"Then you owe me one. About why you look at me like you know something."
He finished the banana, folded the peel into a perfect square, and set it on the step.
"Deal," he said. "I'll need sunglasses."
He put them on, in October, at the foot of a brick building.
They were the wrap-around kind that cyclists wear.
"Better?" I said.
"I can see everything through these," Griffin said, solemnly. "It's my weakness."
"Then try this."
I pulled a sleep mask out of my bag, the kind Rosetta wears when she's mad at the sun, and handed it over.
He pulled it down over the sunglasses.
Now he looked like a bank robber on his way to bed.
"Can you still read?" I said.
"Yes," he said, in a small voice. "It goes right through. It's in the air, Miranda. It's not on my eyes."
"That's not fair."
"That's physics."
"That's not physics."
I tapped my thigh.
"The man in the sleep mask thinks he's a mystery."
