Chapter 8: Seventy-Five Percent
"Delete it," Griffin said, in a voice I'd never heard him use.
Camille looked at him, and then at me, and then at her phone.
"Of course," she said, and her face went soft with surprise. "Oh, you two. I'm so sorry. I was filming B-roll for the gala promo, and I walked in on a private moment."
"Delete it," Griffin said again.
She held up the screen so we could watch her press the trash can.
"Gone," she said. "I'm so happy for you. Honestly, I am. Miranda, you look wonderful together."
Then she squeezed my arm, and went down the stairs humming.
I breathed out.
"She seems fine about it," I said.
"She seems fine," Griffin said, and rubbed his thumb against his palm.
A grey line drifted in, at the edge of the air.
"[Griffin's mouth still tastes like her.]"
I stared at it.
"Why does the commentary track say things like that?" I said.
"Because it's rude," Griffin said, and went red to the ears.
We were not good at the morning after.
Saturday at the dining hall, he said "Hi" and I said "Hi" and Beau watched us, his eyes darting between us.
"What happened?" Beau said.
"Nothing," we both said.
"You're both red."
"It's the soup," I said.
Beau put down his spoon with great dignity.
"I'm going to the boathouse to look at some oars," he said, "and I'm going to take a very long time."
He had an unmistakable smirk on his face.
Griffin took me there anyway, an hour later, after we had both pretended to study in the library.
The boathouse stood at the end of a long dock on the river, a barn of red cedar that smelled of varnish and wet rope.
Upstairs, over the racks of boats, was a loft with a mattress, a heater and a pile of blankets that smelled like his sweatshirt.
