Chapter 9: Table Nine

I presented the seating plan on Monday, with a chart, a pointer and a clean conscience.

The council room was full.

Camille sat at the head of the long table with her clipboard squared against the edge, and Griffin sat three chairs down from me with his phone face up beside his coffee.

I had stayed up until two to build it.

"The model is simple," I said, and clicked to the first slide. "We measured happiness against distance to the kitchen."

"Happiness?" the treasurer said.

"Last year's donors filled out cards. I checked."

I clicked again.

A scatter plot of tiny dots slanted down toward a red line labeled BREAD.

"The closer a table is to the kitchen door, the happier the guests. They get their food hot and first."

Griffin was looking at the chart with his lips pressed shut.

"The data is very clear," I said. "The happiest table in the room is Table Forty."

Camille looked up.

"The one by the kitchen," she said.

"By the kitchen door," I said. "It's the one you gave me last week."

"I remember."

"And since the model says it's the best seat in the room, it should go to the person who has done the most work on this gala."

I clicked to the last slide, which said, in plain black letters, CAMILLE DORAN, CHAIR.

Nobody moved.

A cough came from the far end of the table, and it did not sound like allergies.

Camille's smile didn't slip at all, which was the scariest part.

"Oh, Miranda," she said, warmly. "That's so thoughtful. I'd be honored."
