Chapter 12: The Empty Safe
The hearing was Thursday morning.
Winslow's own lawyer called it a coin flip.
"A judge will see ninety-nine entries in your handwriting," the lawyer said on the phone. "Your mother's lawyer will say you documented your wife's delusions for five years."
"They weren't delusions."
"Then you'll have to prove it. With what?"
Winslow looked at the briefcase on the hospital chair.
He did not answer.
That night, Dorinda came back from the cook's lawyer with a sandwich and her laptop.
She sat on the other side of my bed and opened a folder.
"The cook signed a statement," she said. "Seven times. The jar is bagged and the receipts are copied."
"Good."
"It's not enough, Winslow. It proves your mother poisoned her. It doesn't prove the card, and it doesn't prove Rhona was sane."
"I can prove the card. I have the bank records."
"A judge will ask why you kept them quiet for six months."
He rubbed his face.
"I know."
Dorinda took a breath.
"Then I need to ask about the pills."
I had not expected that.
I drifted closer.
"My pills?" Winslow said.
"Hers. The white bottle in the medicine box, the one the housekeeper wanted to put in storage. You brought it from the house?"
Winslow's jaw moved.
He reached into his jacket and set a small white bottle on the blanket by my hand.
Dorinda turned it over.
She read the label.
She unscrewed the cap, tipped a pill into her palm, and held it to the lamp.
"The label says it's a stomach medication," she said.
