Chapter 10: Name It

Margo's POV

"Term one," I said again. "You don't touch me unless I name it."

"I remember," Torben said. His voice was rough.

"I'm naming it."

He didn't move.

The sun was full on the shelf by then, and the nine stones threw short shadows on the rock.

"Margo, you've been up all night. You're grieving, and so am I." He swallowed. "Term two."

"I know what term two says."

"Then you know I won't be what you use to feel better."

"And I won't be what you use to feel better about your brother," I said. "So we're even."

I stepped across the space between us.

I was angry, and I let him see it.

I was angry at Verity's chamomile, and at my own five years of cold hands and polite smiles, and at every night I had lain beside a man who knew exactly what was on my wrist.

"I'm not doing this because I'm sad," I said. "I'm doing it because I've been told for five years what I wanted. This is what I want. Touch me."

His breath went out of him.

"Where?"

"Everywhere. Now."

His hands came up and stopped an inch from my face.

"You named it," he said, low.

"I did. So do it."

He put his palms on either side of my jaw.

They were hot and rough, and they shook a little.

I had not been kissed by anyone but Heath in six years, and I had not been kissed like I mattered in all that time.

Torben kissed me hard and sure, and I felt it in my knees.

It was slow for about two breaths, and then it wasn't.

I grabbed the front of his shirt with both hands and pulled him to me.

He made a sound against my mouth that went all the way through me, and then he lifted me off my feet.

There was a stone hay hut at the edge of the shelf, with a half-door and a bed of old straw and a horse blanket folded on a shelf.
