Chapter 17: The Cuff on the Stone
"Stop," the keeper said.
She didn't raise her voice, and it carried to the fence.
The two wolves holding Imogen stopped.
"This is a Moot," the old woman said. "A witness who has spoken at the Stone stays under its roof until the keeper lets her go."
She looked at the visiting Alphas.
"Alphas?"
The tall man from the north fork was already walking across the grass.
The young one from the orchard pack went after him, wiping biscuit crumbs from his hands.
Their wolves fell in behind them, thirty or forty at a time, and the line across the meadow broke.
Heath's two wolves looked at their Alpha.
Heath didn't tell them to let go, and he didn't tell them to hold.
"Let her go," the north fork Alpha said.
They let her go.
Imogen stumbled into my arms, and I held her up.
Her whole body was shaking, and she smelled of lavender soap and fear.
"Mags," she whispered. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Stand by the Stone," I said. "Maisy, take her."
Maisy had her under the arm before I finished.
Heath found his voice again.
"A frightened girl who has been ill. That is the whole of your evidence, Luna?"
"No," I said. "Maisy. The bag."
Maisy passed Imogen to a Blackfern woman and set the green tote on the Stone.
She took out the cuff and laid it on the granite where the moon could reach it.
It was a plain silver band, as wide as two fingers, with a little hinge.
The Luna's crescent was stamped on its face.
I had worn it for five years.
It looked very small.
"This was on my left wrist," I said to the Moot. "Alpha Castelnaud put it there on our wedding night and kept the key. Every Luna wears her seal, so I never asked."
