Chapter 18: Delaney's Birthday

Hannah's POV

I sent Delaney the baby-picture slideshow at eleven that night, and she answered in four minutes.

"Perfect. Make my prom photo bigger."

I made it bigger.

On Sunday the sixteenth, Rhys got to the restaurant an hour early and plugged his laptop into the back room's television.

He tested the first slide, a toddler Delaney in a tutu, and then he put the screen to sleep and sat down at the corner of the long table with his tie crooked.

He didn't look at me.

I knew exactly where he was every second.

The back room had sixteen chairs and a red tablecloth and a balloon arch in gold.

Mom had ordered the arch.

I wore the yellow cardigan over a plain black dress.

Relatives came in by twos, and I stood by the door and let myself be kissed.

My aunt told me I looked thin. My uncle told me I looked tired.

Two of my cousins asked about the thread, and my mother said, "We don't discuss that," from across the room.

Taylor walked in at six-ten with a camera bag over her shoulder.

"I'm taking pictures for Hannah," she told Mom, who loved Taylor and kissed her on the cheek.

Nobody asked why she needed three phones.

Dad came last of the family, in his good brown suit, and found me by the coat rack.

He held me by the shoulders and looked at my face.

"Your mother says you got a job," he said.
