Chapter 8: She Will Not Read His Apology
At six on Monday evening, Adrian slides three stapled pages across the MercerDx boardroom table.
"You will read this before anyone leaves."
His black pen has signed the last page.
The ink is still wet around the final letter of his name.
Petra takes the pages first.
She has spent the week as my chief operating officer and my wall, and she reads the title before she passes them to me.
Three department heads sit around the table with their laptops closed.
The board chair's representative stands beside the screen, legal pad ready.
No one speaks.
Adrian has arranged the chairs in a half circle.
He wants witnesses close enough to see my face.
"Read it aloud," he says.
I look down at the first page.
Joint Statement Regarding the Temporary Governance Review.
The opening paragraph says Adrian acted during an acute period of grief.
It says I regret allowing a private family matter to become a public disruption.
The final sentence calls my return an unexpected medical recovery.
That is how he wants the record to describe a living woman walking into probate court.
"The statement is factual," Adrian says.
"It gives everyone a way forward."
"It gives you a way out," Petra says.
He turns to her.
"You have been protective of Lena all week. I understand that."
"You asked for my system credentials four times."
"Because the company needed continuity."
"Because you were not authorized to enter the restricted floors."
Adrian lets the silence sit.
He has always been good at waiting for other people to doubt themselves.
I turn the page.
The second paragraph credits Adrian with protecting employees and preventing an uncontrolled transfer of founder voting rights.
It does not mention that Petra kept his people from clearing my office.
It does not mention that his emergency vote is set for tomorrow at noon.
"This section is false," I say.
Adrian keeps his face open for the department heads.
"Which part?"
"You did not protect the company. You tried to take it."
