Chapter 8: The Last Day of the Week

Saturday was the last day of Silvan's week, and neither of us said so.

He put on a clean shirt, took the truck keys off the hook, and drove me to the Sanborn house himself.

"I said alone," I said. "He's going to say I broke the deal."

"He can say it to me."

"Silvan."

"I'm not coming in as your lawyer. I'm coming in as the guy who drove you."

I gave up arguing.

The same gravel drive led up to the same stone house, and the lawn where the white chairs had stood was bare.

I felt each step in my knees.

The housekeeper let us in without a word.

Rhett was in the front hall, with the family lawyer by the staircase and a thin folder in his hand.

He looked at Silvan, and his jaw tightened.

"I said alone."

"Yes," Silvan said.

"Fine. It doesn't matter." Rhett turned the folder over. "Rochelle, I've done what I can. Mom's lawyer is ready to file Monday. I can make it go away."

"For a signature."

"For one signature. And then Saturday afternoons, an hour at a time, and Mom in the room. We'll work up to more."

"To more of what?"

"To whatever you want."

I looked at the lawyer. He studied the banister.

"What I want," I said slowly, "is to put my hand on the head of the child I've raised for four years and not have your mother's lawyer standing by."

"Rochelle, please be reasonable."

"I'm being reasonable. I'm asking to be called what I am."
