Chapter 11: The Name on His Chest
The pack hall held two hundred people, and every one of them came.
Twelve elders sat on a raised bench at the far end.
Beatrix stood to the left of the bench with her cane, in black.
Hamish walked in beside me.
He had not asked to, and I had not told him not to.
Linnea was behind us, and Finlay was upstairs asleep with his nanny sitting beside him.
The eldest elder rapped the bench twice.
"The Luna has brought a claim," he said. "That a woman who broke a mate bond before this council has no right to a pack child. We will hear her first."
Beatrix stepped forward.
"She walked out on my son in the worst week of his life," she said. "Five years she let him grieve. Now she arrives with a story and a vial of blood, and she says a boy I have raised is hers."
"He is hers," Hamish said.
"Alpha, you will wait your turn."
"I'm your Alpha, and I'm speaking."
The eldest elder lifted a hand.
"Let him."
Hamish stepped to the center of the floor.
The hall went quiet.
He put his hands to the buttons of his shirt and began to undo them.
I heard people murmur.
I didn't understand what he meant to do, and my stomach tightened.
He let the shirt fall from his shoulders and stood bare to the waist in front of the whole pack.
Across his chest, in black ink gone slightly gray at the edges, in tall plain letters, was a name.
YVAINE.
"I had it done the night she left," he said. "I've touched it up twice. I went to a studio in Briar Mill three days ago to do it a third time, because it was fading, and I didn't know she lived there."
