Chapter 20: A Chair of My Own

Linnet's POV

The Council gave me an hour to think, which was an hour longer than they had given me eleven years before.

I spent it on the castle roof with Edith, a flask of tea and the sound of the festival drums below.

"They will offer it," Edith said. "The crown. Whatever they call it."

"I know."

"You could have it back by supper."

"I know that too."

She looked at me over the rim of her cup.

"Do you want it?"

I thought of the east wing, and the three hundred people in the hall, and the pen.

"No," I said.

"Good."

"But I do want something."

"Then go and say so," she said. "Before they offer you something worse."

The hall was full again, with the packmasters on both sides this time.

Alaric stood to the left of the dais.

He did not speak, because the Council had forbidden it.

He had agreed to that without argument.

The eldest rose.

"Linnet Faraday," he said. "The Council has found that the decree against you was void. The title of Luna Queen is yours by the bond and by the stone. We offer it to you now, with the apology of this court."

The packmasters rose and bowed.

I let them finish.

"No," I said.

A stir went through the hall.

"Thank you for the apology," I said. "I'll take it. I'll keep the money and the townhouse too, since the decree gave them to me and nobody has asked for them back."

A few of the small packmasters laughed.
