Chapter 22: In Ethan's Own Words

Lena's POV

The hearing took place three weeks later, on a gray Monday, in a courtroom so full that people stood along the back wall.

Eleanor sat in the second row with her cane, and the housekeeper sat beside her holding a thermos.

Samson sat behind me.

Across the aisle Ethan sat alone at the table with a folder, in the same navy suit he'd worn to every bad morning of this.

He had no lawyer.

Nobody in Hartford would take his case.

Becca sat near the door, in a plain gray dress, with her hands folded and her eyes on the floor.

The judge was the same woman who had refused to decide a child's life on one photograph.

She had the sworn statement in front of her.

"Mr. Sorrell," she said. "You've asked this court to award you half of Fairbanks Hotels, on the ground that your wife concealed her inheritance."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Before I rule on that, I want one document in the record. It's from Ms. Dunn, and I'm going to read part of it aloud so that everyone understands what this case is."

Ethan's head came up.

"Objection."

"To what? You aren't a lawyer, and you aren't entitled to one." She put on her glasses. "Ms. Dunn writes: 'In February, five years ago, I learned I was pregnant. I had been seeing two men in the same month, Ethan Sorrell and his brother. I knew from the first day that the child might be Samson's.'"
