Chapter 5: The Nanny's Chair
The Sorrell house stood at the end of a long gravel drive, white pillars and every window lit at two in the afternoon.
A housekeeper opened the door, and Ethan got to me before she could take my coat.
He had come out of the dining room fast, in a gray suit and a smile that was gone when he saw me.
"I paid you," he said, low and furious. "You said Connecticut was off the table."
"You paid me for housekeeping," I said. "I'm here to work."
His eyes went over my navy dress, my old coat and my face.
I watched him decide what to do with me.
"Fine," he said. "Then you're the nanny."
"I'm the what?"
"Becca's nanny. She needed help with Maisie today. Keep your head down and cut the child's turkey, and nobody asks you anything." He took my elbow and steered me. "You're doing me a favor, remember."
I let him.
I want to say that clearly: I let him, on purpose, because I wanted the whole family to watch him lie before I opened my mouth.
The dining room was long and warm, set for twenty-four.
An old woman sat at the head of the table in a dark wool dress with a pearl pin.
Her hair was white, her back was perfectly straight, and her pale eyes went over me once and moved on.
Eleanor Sorrell.
Becca stood beside her in a blue dress I had helped her pick in September.
Maisie stood at Becca's knee, in a yellow cardigan, holding a drawing.
"Grandmother, this is Becca and my daughter," Ethan said. "And this is Lena, the nanny."
