Chapter 29: I'll Let You Go
Javier did not come back to room fourteen that night, or the next day, or the night after.
He sat his anatomy practical on Wednesday morning two rows away from Dante and did not look at him.
On Thursday at one in the morning Dante's phone lit on the desk.
Clinic. 2 a.m. Come if you want to.
He was in the quad in four minutes, in his coat.
He kept his hands in his pockets, so that nobody could say what he did with them.
The clinic was lit at the one window, and the bell rang as he opened the door.
Javier sat behind the night desk with his glasses on and a stack of charts in front of him.
He had not slept.
It was in the gray under his eyes, and in the way he held the pen.
"Sit," he said.
Dante sat in the plastic chair, facing him across the desk, where a hundred patients had sat.
"I got a single room from the warden," Javier said. "In the east wing. He didn't ask why. He looked like he wanted to be sick."
"He'll have been afraid for you."
"He's been afraid for you." Javier laid the pen down. "Everyone has. The dean wouldn't look at me this morning."
"I knelt and asked them to lie. That was mine, not theirs."
"I know whose it was."
Dante waited.
He had learned, in this life, how to wait without his hands.
"I want to tell you something," Javier said. "I've been working out how to say it for two days, and I'll get it wrong. Don't answer until I'm done."
"All right."
"In the first week, you put a coffee on my desk, made exactly how I take it, and you hadn't asked. I said, he pays attention. I liked you for it."
His voice was steady, and it cost him.
"Then you knew which exam I was afraid of. Then you knew about the blanket on my feet, and you moved it in your sleep. And every time I thought, he's just good at me. He sees me."
