Signe's POV
For ten days we lived with the eleventh of December like a third person at the table.
Wyatt would not talk about it.
He did what he always did.
He fixed things and drove things and pulled stuck trucks out of ditches with a chain and his temper.
At night he held me hard and said nothing, and I lay awake with the arithmetic.
I told myself that I had time, and I knew a dispatcher is never told that.
On the forty-fourth day the net broke.
It started with one voice at dawn, a man's, scraping and hoarse.
"Haugen. You there?"
"I'm here," I said.
"My sister was at the Rowena elevator. You sent her. You said it was safe."
I stopped with my coffee halfway up.
The Rowena elevator was a grain depot, a concrete tower with a well and a rail spur and walls two feet thick.
In the first life forty families had held it from the twentieth day to the sixtieth, and they'd never lost one.
Three days ago I had sent forty families there, on the open net, in my dispatcher's voice.
