Signe's POV
By the sixtieth day I had a war room, and it was a day room with a worn couch.
Tor lay on the couch under a Guard blanket, forbidden to stand.
A map lay on his lap, and a medic's checklist was taped to the wall behind him.
Wyatt sat on an upturned crate with his elbows on his knees.
Bets sat at the end with her laptop on a footstool.
Jonas lay on his stomach on the floor with his notebook.
Forty-three farm people leaned in the doorways and listened.
It was the first time I'd laid the whole thing out aloud.
"The eleventh of December," I said. "A warm wind from the west."
"It starts before noon, and by early afternoon it's above freezing."
"The first thaw," said Tor.
"Every gray in the city has stood in the street since the middle of October," I said. "White with frost, stiff as lumber."
"When the wind takes the frost off, they all wake at once."
"How many?" Tor said.
"I don't know. Tens of thousands. They'll go for the loudest thing in the city."
"The arena," Wyatt said.
"With three thousand people in it and a generator the size of a bus. It'll be the loudest building in the county."
