Chapter 24: The Cold Room
The cold room was black and ringing with the compressor.
My breath turned to fog in the dark, and the fog turned to frost on my eyelashes.
Eleven below.
I pulled my hood up and put my back to the door.
I thought: this is how long a person has.
Not long.
Without gloves, an hour. With them, perhaps two, and then the cold takes your thinking first.
"Don't sit," said a voice from the dark. "If you sit down you won't stand."
I nearly screamed.
Someone was in the corner behind the meat racks.
A match flared, a small cheap flame.
I saw a young man with his knees drawn up and a deputy's jacket buttoned to the throat.
He was thin, with blue lips and a stubble of ice on his chin.
It was the deputy from the Cliff Avenue gate, the one who had laid his rifle on the hood of the SUV.
"You," I said.
"Unit two-fourteen," he said, trying to smile. "I told them I wouldn't do it again."
"How long have you been in here?"
"Since Thursday. They let me out for water." He blew on his hands. "I'm fine."
He wasn't. His fingertips were white and waxy in the match light, and his speech had begun to slur.
