Chapter 10: Aunt Jody
I didn't take the coffee.
Dylan kept holding it out anyway, so the camera could see me not taking it.
"Oat milk," he said. "You still like oat?"
"Get off my step."
"I came to apologize properly. Face to face. Like a grown-up." He leaned to look past me into the kitchen. "Is Uncle Ram up yet? Long night?"
The crewman behind him snorted.
"He's thirty-seven, Jodes. Go easy. Men his age need their sleep."
"Turn that off," I said to the crewman.
He didn't.
He was being paid not to.
The stairs creaked behind me.
Ramsey came down in yesterday's jeans and nothing else, his hair wrecked, and stopped in the kitchen doorway.
The red light swung to him.
Dylan's smile got wider.
"There he is. Did you tuck her in, Uncle Ram? Must be weird for you." He sipped his own coffee. "She used to say I was the one. Right in that bed, actually."
My hand was flat on Dylan's chest before I knew I'd moved.
I walked him backward.
One step.
Two.
He was so busy smiling for the camera that he forgot the porch had an edge.
His heel found air, and he went off the side of the steps into the rain and landed flat on his back in the mud by the downspout.
Both coffees went up and came down on him.
Kyla screamed.
The crewman, God bless him, kept filming.
I stood at the top of the steps in Ramsey's shirt with the rain blowing in on my bare feet.
"Get off my porch," I said. "Get off this land. All of you. Now."
