Chapter 11: The Boardroom

The van spun its wheels in the mud and fishtailed down the drive.

I turned to Ramsey.

"Did you know?"

"I knew my brother's will had a marriage clause," he said. "Married by thirty, or his share stays in the trust. I never knew the number meant anything to Dylan. He always had money."

"He doesn't anymore."

"Apparently not."

I thought about JFK.

His hand on his heart.

I'm back to marry you.

"He came back for me because I was the fastest wedding he could get," I said.

Ramsey's jaw went tight.

Clyde picked his mug up off the rail.

He went down the steps and back toward the barn without a word, his slicker flapping.

I ran after him barefoot through the wet grass.

"Clyde. Clyde, stop."

He stopped in the barn doorway.

Mabel was standing.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I should have told you. It's your land. It's your life."

He looked at me for a long time.

"Twenty-six years I've been fighting for these girls," he said. "You've been at it six. You don't get to carry it alone just because you're younger."

"I know."

"Next time, you tell me first. Before the hotel man. Before anybody."

"I will."

He grunted.

Then he put his hand on the back of my head and pulled me against his shoulder, rough and quick.

"You're dripping on me," he said.

"You're dripping on me."

Ramsey's phone rang at ten.

He listened, said, "Fine," and hung up.

"Darlene's called an emergency meeting," he said. "Tomorrow. Ten a.m. Midtown. Both motions."

"She moved it up."

"She saw the video. She wants it done before her son says anything else on camera."

The Gannett Trust office was on the thirtieth floor of a glass tower on Madison Avenue.

The conference room had a long walnut table and a view of half of Manhattan.
