Chapter 12: The Coronado
The ballroom at the Coronado had a ceiling of dark honey wood.
I walked under it on Thursday night in a green dress I had bought for myself.
Ruel came in beside me in a charcoal jacket and the good shirt, with his hand at the small of my back.
Nobody looked at us with pity this time.
Two men from Pacific Crest Capital rose from a round table near the windows.
One was gray and thin, and one was young and sharp.
They pulled out my chair.
"Ms. Medeiros," the gray one said. "We have been looking forward to this."
"Mr. Braddock didn't tell us who we'd be meeting," I said.
"Mr. Braddock does not know that we invited you."
The younger one smiled at that.
"Our money is in the Clarissa B.," he said. "She has to be at her berth by the third of July."
