Chapter 17: Noelle

Noelle Moriarty came to the yard alone, at noon, on foot.

She had parked her rental car at the top of the gravel road and walked down in flat shoes and a plain gray suit.

Her light brown hair was tied back, and there were no rings on her hands.

I was standing on the dock with a clipboard and a mouthful of coffee, and I almost choked on it.

"Ms. Medeiros," she said.

"Ms. Moriarty."

"Is there somewhere we can talk where your captain doesn't hear?"

"Anselmo is deaf in one ear," I said. "Come on."

I took her into the tin shed and shut the door.

My father's workbench stood against the wall where Ruel had once set me on it.

I did not look at it.

Noelle stayed standing, with her purse held in front of her in both hands.

"I won't take much of your time," she said. "I came to tell you the numbers."

"Why?"

"Because I'm leaving Wendell, and I would like to do one useful thing before I go."
