Chapter 21: The Pier
Filipa's POV
Ruel kissed me at the foot of the pilot boat's ladder, in the dark, with his hand fisted in my sweatshirt.
It was a hard, short kiss, and his thumb pressed the inside of my wrist where my pulse ran.
"I'll see you on the water," he said against my mouth.
Then he took the pilot boat out to a nine-hundred-foot ship at the sea buoy, and I went back to my tugs.
By eight o'clock the Tenth Avenue pier was full.
The television camera stood on its tripod ten feet from the platform, in the same spot as in April.
Three hundred people crowded behind the ropes, and a hundred and forty families in orange vests stood at the very front.
Pacific Crest's two principals waited by the gangway with the Singapore investors, who wore dark suits and held their phones.
The Clarissa B. lay at anchor in the channel off the pier head, black and enormous, with the pilot's flag at her bow.
