Chapter 22: Come Alongside
The Clarissa B. lay at her berth across the water with every deck light burning, and the Santa Rita's wheelhouse was dark.
I shot the bolt on the door and turned around.
Ruel stood in the middle of the floor in his pilot's jacket, with the lights of the ship laid across his shoulders.
He had been on his feet since before dawn.
He looked at me and saw nothing else in the harbor.
"Coat on the floor," I said.
"Captain?"
"Spread it on the deck. Lay it flat."
He took off the navy jacket and laid it down in front of the helm.
"Now your shirt."
He unbuttoned it slowly, holding my eyes, and let it fall.
"Boots."
He stepped out of them.
"Belt, trousers, all of it. Slowly, Pilot. I'm not in a hurry."
He undressed in front of me in the dim glow, and I stood against the chart table and watched.
The old scar under his ribs, the long muscles of his thighs, and all of him, hard already, rising toward his stomach.
My mouth went dry.
"Lie down on your back."
He lay down on the coat.
His chest rose and fell, and his hands rested open at his sides, and his eyes did not leave my face.
"You're going to do exactly what I say," I said.
"Yes, Captain."
"And you do not come until I say."
A sound broke out of him that was half a laugh and half a groan.
"That's my line."
"It's mine tonight."
I pulled my sweater over my head and dropped it.
I took off my bra, then my jeans and underwear, one piece at a time, and let him look.
He looked.
His hands closed into fists on the coat.
"Hold there," I told him.
"I'm holding."
"Good."
I walked around him and stood over his head, a foot on either side of his shoulders.
His gaze traveled up my legs, and I saw the muscle jump in his jaw.
