Chapter 20: The Wound

I didn't say a word in the car.

I looked out of the window at the river going by, gray under a gray sky, until he parked in the garage under his building.

In the freight elevator I stood against the far wall.

"Say it," Ronan said.

"You paid my lawyer."

"Yes."

"Since the week I hired her."

"Yes."

"Without telling me."

"You'd just been fired," he said. "Carrington pulled your boss's contract. You had a bag and a couch. I couldn't hand you money. You'd have thrown it at me."

"I would have."

"So I paid the one person who was going to do the thing you couldn't."

The elevator opened on his floor.

I walked out ahead of him and stood in the middle of his empty apartment, with my coat still on.

"That's what they did to me," I said.

"Who?"

"Everyone. Landon. His mother. They decided what I needed, and they paid for it, and I found out later."

"Jessa, I'm not Marilyn."

"I know you're not. That's why it hurts."

He didn't say anything.

He stood by the door with his hands open.

"I have been owned by people who were kind to me for three years," I said. "Landon bought me a house, a car, a name, and he thought that made it a marriage."

"I'm not asking you to owe me."

"You've made it so I do."

"Then pay me back." His jaw set. "Send the invoice. Every cent, with interest. Take it off the house when you win it."

"That's not the point either."

"Then tell me the point."

"The point," I said, and my voice cracked, "is that you looked at me on a couch with a bag and decided what I could take."

"I decided what I could stand to watch you lose."

It was very quiet.

"I looked for you for seven weeks," Ronan said. "I'd have paid anything. I'd have paid anyone. You think I have a way to love you that isn't this? I've got money and a bad temper, and I used the money."
