Chapter 10: Watch
"Sit," I said, and pointed at the wooden chair at the foot of my bed.
Weston sat.
Eleven hours earlier he had stood in front of the Aldrich board with the photograph on the screen behind him.
He had told eight people in suits that the merger with the Carrington family was off the table.
He had told them he would not discuss his wife with them.
Two directors had walked out.
One had called him a fool.
He had come straight to my door afterward with his jaw set and his tie crooked.
He had said, "I did it," as if reporting to a commander.
I had said, "I know. Fiona watched the livestream."
Now the lamp was low.
The rain had started again.
He sat in the chair with his hands on his knees.
I picked up the tie from the bedpost.
It was the same blue silk, dry now, and I had washed it by hand.
"Put your hands behind you," I said. "Through the slats."
He reached back and threaded his arms through the chair back.
I knelt behind him and bound his wrists, slowly, three turns and a knot, and when I tested it, he couldn't pull free.
His breath came faster.
He did not try.
I came around the chair and stood in front of him.
I was wearing his gray T-shirt and nothing else.
He stared at the hem.
"You're going to watch," I said. "You don't touch, you don't speak, and you don't look away. If you do any of those, I stop."
"Lily."
"That was speaking."
He closed his mouth.
I walked backward to the bed and sat on the edge, facing him, with my feet on the mattress and my knees apart.
Then I took off the T-shirt, slowly, over my head.
