Chapter 16: Kegs
The storeroom of The Anchor Pour smelled of cold stone, spilled beer and cardboard.
Weston Aldrich sat on a half barrel of Guinness waiting for me.
I locked the door behind me and slid the bolt.
"You're late," he said.
"Four minutes."
"I counted."
"Of course you did."
He stood.
He wore jeans, which I had never seen on him.
A gray sweater with the sleeves pushed up, and in that bare gold light his forearms looked unfairly good.
I crossed the concrete floor in my boots.
Stacks of crates rose on every side, labeled in marker, Lagers, Stouts, Seltzer, DO NOT LET WESTON TOUCH.
I laughed.
"She did not."
"She did. I found it at nine."
"She put that up there on purpose."
"I'd like to point out I touched nothing."
"You touched the keg."
"I sat on the keg."
"Same thing."
I put my palms flat on his chest and shoved him backward until his shoulders hit the crate stack.
The cardboard boomed.
He grinned down at me with a boy's grin, all teeth.
"That's the fiercest thing I've seen all week," he said.
"Shut up."
"Making me."
I fisted his sweater and kissed him.
It was nothing like the lobby kiss.
It was messy and fast and half laughter, our teeth clicking, my back against his arm as he spun us and slammed me up against the nearest stack.
The crates rattled.
A bottle somewhere rolled and chimed.
"Careful," I said, against his mouth. "She'll kill us."
"She'll kill me."
"She'll kill us both."
His hands were already under my shirt, hot on my ribs.
I pulled his sweater up over his head and threw it across a keg.
I sank my teeth into his shoulder.
