Chapter 24: The Cost
By nightfall the old woman from the market cross was standing in the dower house kitchen, with her bonnet in her hands.
Calista had not sent for her.
Nobody had.
She had come up the hill on her own legs with a basket of eggs, and behind her in the yard stood the blacksmith, the miller's wife and the foreman, hats off.
There were about thirty by the end, crowded in the lane in the cold.
They did not shout.
They stood.
"Begging your pardon, my lady," said the old woman, whose name Calista had known all her life and who was now, suddenly, too shy to give it. "I brought you the eggs. I thought it only right."
"What are they for?"
"For what you are doing," the old woman said.
"What am I doing?"
"Whatever it is," said the old woman, "that gets the Marquis put out. We heard. The whole parish says it's you. They say you three women will bring him down, and good riddance."
"Who says so?"
"Everyone."
Calista put the eggs on the dresser.
She was aware of Elowen watching her from the stove, and Ottilie from the doorway, and Evander at the table with his hands very still.
"I'll tell you what I know," she said. "If the Marquis is ruined, the estate is sealed. Everything on it is sold. The Hall, the farms, the leases. Your cottage."
