Chapter 22: Scrubbing the Floor
We reached Thunderbolt at half past five, and Whit's truck was parked crooked across two spaces with its door hanging open.
He sat on the end of the dock in his ball clothes, with his tie off and his shoes in his hand and his feet over the water.
Frankie stood in the shack door with her arms folded.
"He's been out there since three," she said to me. "I offered him coffee. He said he didn't deserve it."
"Does he?"
"Not yet." She went inside and came out with a bucket and a mop and set them down beside him. "Floor's filthy. I've been meaning to get to it."
Whit looked at the mop.
Then he stood, rolled his sleeves to the elbow, and went in.
By six o'clock the regulars had come in off the boats, and seven men in oilskins sat at the counter with their grits and watched Whit scrub the shack floor on his knees.
He did it badly, left-handed, with his jaw set.
Brendan stood against the far wall with his arms folded and did not offer to help.
I stood beside him.
When the floor was done, Whit wrung his hands out on his trousers.
He turned and faced the room.
"I want to say something," he said. His voice shook. "I want to say it in front of all of you, because that's how I did it the first time."
Nobody moved.
"Belle," he said. "I stood up at our rehearsal dinner and ended it in front of eighty people. I did it because my mother told me to, and because I was afraid of her. I let her put a check on the table for you like a tip."
I did not say anything.
"It wasn't her idea only," Whit said. "I said yes. I could have said no, and I said yes. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
