"No," Gaspare said.
"I haven't asked yet."
"You were about to ask for the car keys."
"I was about to ask for a pistol."
"You have one."
"Then I was about to ask for the other one."
He almost smiled, and it vanished.
We stood in his study with Venera's photograph on the little black screen between us.
Nella had gone to find the consigliere.
It was four in the afternoon, and the light lay in long stripes across the carpet.
"He wants a wife," Gaspare said. "You walk in alone, he has one."
"He wants Venera to be the one he's hurt. He took her because he couldn't take me. Now he knows he can."
"Rosaria."
"What's the alternative? You go in with forty men and he cuts her throat before you reach the door."
"I go in alone."
"He said bring the Don and she comes back in pieces."
"I don't care what he said."
"I do."
He turned away and put both hands on the desk.
I watched his shoulders.
I had thought, in the hall, that I had never seen him afraid.
I had been wrong, and now I could see it in the way his hands pressed down.
"I decided alone once," he said, to the desk. "It cost me you for a week. It cost the Family a funeral. I am not going to do it again."
"Then don't."
"Tell me what you want."
I stared at his back.
He had asked.
He had actually asked me.
"I'll walk in," I said. "You'll be at the north dock gate, in a car, with the window down. Not in the hall. Not near the table. If I raise my right hand, you come."
"And if he has your hand tied?"
