Chapter 10: Fourth Birthday

"No," Keith said.

Preston's eyebrows went up.

"No? You don't want to hear your wife begging me to come to the hospital?"

"I don't need to hear it."

Keith put his hand at the small of my back, and his palm was steady.

"Whatever she said, she said it to a phone that never rang back. I'll take her word over your recording."

"You're a fool."

"Probably." He turned me toward the door. "Keep the basket, Chef. Send it to somebody who wants it."

I felt six cooks watch us leave.

In the car I sat with my hands in my lap, and he drove.

"You didn't ask what I said," I whispered.

"The ninth," Keith said, eyes on the road. "I told you. After the cake."

That was nine days.

He kept his promise to wait and he kept his promise to take me to dinner.

At the candlelit table on Friday, I told him about the first time I ever saw him, at a college bonfire, arguing with a boy about whether a sandwich was a sandwich.

He told me he had picked the restaurant because the booths had high backs, and then he reached across the tablecloth and took my hand and held it for the whole dessert.

That was all.

It was enough to keep me awake for two nights.

On the ninth of November, the backyard was full of balloons.

We had thirty guests, forty counting the children.
