Chapter 8: Ice Storm

"Tell me," I said from the study floor.

Keith stood in the doorway with his work boots still on.

"Not today."

"Keith."

"After their birthday." His voice was very low. "It's in nine days. They've been scared of the man in the yard all week. I won't have them wake up to us screaming in the kitchen."

"We wouldn't scream."

"I would."

I had never heard him say that.

He came into the room and crouched, close but not touching, and took the two papers out of my hands.

He put them back in the folder, squared the edges, and closed the drawer.

"Do you hate me?" I asked.

"I've never hated you."

"Then what is this?"

"Two years of me trying to find out whether you'd stay when staying was the hard thing." He stood. "I'll answer all of it. On the ninth, after the cake."

"Fine."

"Fine?"

"I'll wait," I said. "I owe you that."

He looked at me for a long moment, then went to wake the twins from their nap.

That night the ice storm came.

It had been on the radio for two days, a cold rain freezing as it landed, and by nine the whole street was coated in ice.

Connie had taken the twins at five for a sleepover, because she had a generator, and her house was the warmest on the block.

So at nine-fifteen, when the tree limb came down across the power line behind our house, it was only Keith and me.
