Chapter 12: The Name

By eleven the lawn was full of people with cameras.

Graham had called it an open house for the press, and he had been on the phone about it since seven.

A small tent stood by the porch, with coffee, and a podium with a banner that said ROWNTREE FOR STATE SENATE: A COMPLETE HOME FOR EVERY FAMILY.

I stood in the kitchen doorway in a clean sweater with my arms folded.

I had not slept much, and I could still feel the cot under my back.

I kept looking at the end of the drive.

The stone from the pillow was in my pocket, and I turned it over and over.

I told myself that he said noon.

It was not noon yet.

"Nora." Delphine came up beside me with Teddy on her hip and her smile carefully back in place. "Would you stand with us for the photographs? Graham thinks it would look better."

"Better than what?"

"Than you hiding in the kitchen."

She said it kindly.

I looked at her tight knuckles on Teddy's back.

"No," I said. "I'll stand where I want."

"Of course," she said, and went.

A young reporter in a blazer drifted over with a notebook.

"Mrs. Rowntree? Is it true you're moving out?"

"It's Ms. Kittredge," I said. "And no."

"The campaign says you've been under some strain."

"The campaign is hosting a party in my house."

She wrote that down.

She looked pleased.

At noon exactly, Graham stepped to the podium and tapped the microphone.
