Chapter 4: The Board Room
The foundation board met on Tuesday at seven-thirty, and I walked in still wearing my scrubs.
The conference room was on the fourth floor of the old building, with a long table and a view of the parking garage.
Five chairs were filled.
Colt sat at the head with a folder in front of him and did not look up when I came in.
Camille sat at his right, in a cream blouse, with her hands folded.
On the left were the retired judge, the banker, and the hospital's lawyer, who had been made to sit through three years of my budgets.
"Della," the judge said gently. "Do sit."
"I'll stand. I came off a twelve-hour shift, and if I sit down I'll fall asleep."
Someone coughed.
Colt cleared his throat.
"Thank you for coming. I know you've had a hard week."
"I've had a loud one," I said. "Go ahead."
He opened the folder and read from it without lifting his eyes.
"The chair has asked to step down, in order to focus on her family and her return to nursing. I'd like to accept her resignation and thank her for three extraordinary years."
I took the brown folder out of my bag and put it on the table.
The page was in it, unsigned, with the yellow flag still on the line.
"I haven't asked to step down," I said. "You wrote that sentence, Colt."
"I wrote it so you wouldn't have to."
"Then you wrote it for the wrong person."
The banker looked at the judge, and the judge looked at the lawyer.
Nobody was looking at Camille, so I looked at her.
