I stared down at the text in the dark dining room.
Ezra read it over my shoulder.
"You're not going alone."
"He'll burn it if I don't."
"He's bluffing."
"He took it out of my kitchen drawer the night he moved her in," I said. "He's not bluffing. He just needs me to watch."
Ezra's jaw worked.
"Then I'll be across the street. At the window. The whole time."
Monday at ten I walked into Ellsworth House through the front door.
The dining room was dark.
The chairs were still up on the tables from Sunday.
Nobody had mopped.
It smelled like old fryer oil and something sour in the drains.
Neil was sitting at table nine.
My table nine, the counter by the pass.
Lorna sat two stools down from him, gloves folded in her lap.
I stopped.
"You said alone."
"I said you come alone," Neil said. "Mom's a partner. She's allowed to be here."
