Chapter 13: The Back Booth

Roz was standing at the end of the back booth with the bat across her shoulders when Nolan and I came in.

The Saari Tap wasn't open yet. The chairs were still up on the tables.

Brent sat with his back to the wall and both hands around a glass of water.

He looked like he hadn't slept since the luncheon. His sandy hair stuck up on one side.

"Twelve minutes," Roz said, not to me. "He's been here since six, and he's drunk nothing but water. I checked the glass."

"Thank you, Roz."

"I'm standing right here."

"I know."

I slid into the booth across from Brent. Nolan stayed on his feet at the end of the table.

Brent looked at Nolan and then away.

"You know," he said.

"Since this morning," I said. "Say it to my face, Brent."

His throat worked.

"Belinda and I started in Denver. Lars's birthday trip, in June. You weren't there, because of your shots."

"I remember."

"We were in the hotel bar until two. I walked her to her room, and I didn't leave." He swallowed. "It kept going after we flew home."

"For how long?"

"Until she told me, six weeks later. In my truck. She was crying and laughing at the same time."

"And your wife?"

He shut his eyes.

"I told Lars first. He's my best friend, Joss. I didn't know who else to tell."

Nolan's arms were crossed. He said nothing, but I felt him listening.

"What did Lars say?"

"He didn't say anything for a minute. Then he laughed." Brent put his hand over his mouth and took it away again. "He told me he couldn't have kids. He said he'd known for three years."
