Chapter 24: The Offer
The attorney was sitting at the cottage kitchen table with a cup of the housekeeper's tea when I came through the door.
Tobias had beaten me there by two minutes.
He stood by the stove with his arms crossed.
Maisie was on the stairs with her sketchbook, pretending not to listen.
"Maisie," I said. "Please go upstairs with the housekeeper."
She went, with one look back at the man.
I sat down across from him.
He had a silver pen and a leather folder, and he wore his sympathy like a coat.
"Mrs. Carraway. Thank you for seeing me. Mr. Carraway asked me to deliver an offer."
"You've delivered it. Say it."
"Mr. Carraway regrets the events of the last two weeks." He turned the folder around and opened it. "He is prepared to resolve this tonight."
"How?"
"A divorce by consent. He will not contest the stay on the adoption, and he'll sign a joint petition to set it aside quietly. You will have full custody of the child."
"And?"
"You will receive one and a half million dollars, free and clear."
Tobias made a very small noise.
I kept my face still.
"What does he want?"
"Peace." He slid a second document across. "You withdraw your statement to the board. You tell the fraud unit that the jewelry claim was a family misunderstanding. You retract your testimony about the trust. And you sign this confidentiality agreement."
"Nobody speaks of this."
"Nobody speaks of it. It is a very generous offer."
I read the first page of the agreement.
Then I read it again to make sure.
It said that I would never discuss Philip R. Carraway, the Carraway family or the Tierney Memorial Trust, in any forum, for the rest of my life.
"One and a half million," I said.
