Chapter 10: The Boxes
Jo's POV
I crossed the street at seven the next morning with the alarm log on my phone.
Sam opened his door before I reached the top step.
He looked tired, and he was already holding two mugs.
"I need to ask you something," I said.
"Come in."
"Does your doorbell camera face my house?"
"It faces the street. It catches your driveway."
"Then I want the footage from last night. Between two and four."
He set the mugs on the hall table.
Then he did something I had not expected.
He took a long, slow breath and said, "I have something better, and I have to tell you something first. Sit down."
"I'd rather stand."
"Okay."
He told me all of it.
He told me all of it, and then he played the short video on his phone, all dark except the shape of a hood.
I watched it three times.
"So she has a second night," I said. "And somebody who hands her an envelope."
"I couldn't see a face," he said. "I wish I had."
I handed the phone back.
My hands were steady, which surprised me.
"Why did you wait until this morning?"
"Because I wanted to have more."
"More than a woman meeting someone in my backyard?"
"More than a guess."
He stopped.
His jaw worked.
"There's one more thing," he said. "And it's worse."
I waited.
"The day Colleen's first truck came," he said, "I was home. I saw two men carrying boxes into your house, and a woman in the doorway giving orders. I thought she was a relative of Carlton's. I thought you knew."
The hallway went very quiet.
"When?" I said.
